The Four Directions in Shamanism

Living in connection with the medicine wheel of earth, air, fire and water

The Medicine Wheel: A Living Compass for Soul and Rhythm

In shamanism, the four cardinal directions aren’t simply compass points, but living spiritual forces . Each direction represents a unique energy that helps you understand life in all its phases and layers.

They represent the seasons, the stages of life, the elements, inner qualities, totem animals, and colors. Together, they form the medicine wheel —a circle that teaches you how to live in balance, attuned to the natural rhythms of the earth and your soul.

Working with the cardinal directions is a powerful way to experience clarity, focus, and spiritual depth. By consciously incorporating these four forces into your rituals, meditations, or daily life, you rebalance your energy .

The East – Dawn, Inspiration and New Beginnings

  • Element: Air
  • Season: Spring
  • Color: Yellow or white
  • Totem animal: Eagle
  • Theme: Vision, Birth, Awakening

The east marks the beginning of a cycle. Just as the sun rises anew each day, this direction invites you to begin anew—with clarity, hope, and an open heart.

In ceremonies, the east symbolizes the reception of dreams, visions, and intuitive insights. The eagle helps you look down from above, determine your direction, and gather courage for what lies ahead.

Questions for the East:

– What wants to be born in me ?

– Which view may I follow?

– What really inspires me?

The South – Fire, Growth and Passion

  • Element: Fire
  • Season: Summer
  • Color: Red
  • Totem animal: Coyote, snake or lion
  • Theme: Youth, strength, ego, spontaneity

South is the direction of full steam ahead. Here you experience fire, movement, and the fiery interplay of life.

It teaches you to take risks, not to suppress your ego but to recognize it, heal it, and use it consciously. This direction encourages you to embrace your life force, to play, to fail, to learn—and to dance again.

Questions for the South:

– Where do I still keep myself small?

– How do I use my inner fire?

– Do I really dare to enjoy life?

The West – Water, Letting Go and Inner Truth

  • Element: Water
  • Season: Autumn
  • Color: Black or deep blue
  • Totem animal: Bear
  • Theme: Introspection, letting go, shadow work

In the west, the sun is setting. This is the direction of stillness, inner truth, and transformation. You turn inward to reflect: what have I harvested, what can I let go of?

The bear – your guide in the West – teaches you to retreat without fear. Here you’ll engage in conversation with your shadow parts and rediscover yourself.

Questions for the West:

– What is still holding me back?

– Which old stories can I let go of now?

– What inner truth wants to be heard?

The North – Earth, Wisdom and Silence

  • Element: Earth
  • Season: Winter
  • Color: White or ice blue
  • Totem animal: Buffalo or owl
  • Theme: Old age, peace, insight, gratitude

In the north, you’ll find silence, perspective, and wisdom. Here you can rest after an inner journey. You’ll gather insights, honor your experiences, and practice gratitude.

The white buffalo and owl remind you that strength lies in gentleness. This direction invites you to slow down and make space for what’s truly important.

Questions for the North:

– What am I grateful for?

– What life lessons do I carry with me?

– What do I want to pass on to the world?

The Fifth Direction – Your Center

Besides the four directions, there is a fifth force: the center . This is your heart, your center—the place where everything converges. Here, the beat of the shaman’s drum resounds most powerfully.

From your center, you can connect with any direction, attuned to your needs. This is the place of presence, truth, and unity.

Ritual: Opening the Four Directions

A simple ritual to get in touch:

  1. Stand in the middle of your space
  2. First, face east. Speak:“I welcome the East, source of inspiration and new beginnings.”

  3. Turn with the sun and greet the South, West and North in the same way
  4. Close by honoring Earth (below you), Heaven (above you), and your Center (your heart)

This short ceremony is a powerful anchor for your day, your intentions or your spiritual path.

In Conclusion: Walk in Beauty

The four cardinal directions aren’t concepts. They are living forces that are all around you—in the seasons, the sun, the wind, your breath, and your voice. By acknowledging, greeting, and working with them, you remind yourself of who you are: part of a larger circle.

In beauty I walk… with the cardinal directions around me.

In beauty I live… carried by earth, air, fire, and water.

In beauty I am… born again and again.
